The average (or mean) is the most common way to sum up a set of numbers: marks in a class, monthly expenses, daily sales. This calculator gives the mean along with the median, mode and range, which help when a few very high or low values pull the average away.
How to use the average calculator
Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas or spaces, for example 12, 15, 18, 20, 20, 25. Decimals and negative numbers are allowed.
Formulas
Mean = sum of all numbers ÷ how many numbers
Median = the middle number after sorting (average of the two middle numbers if the count is even)
Mode = the number that appears most often
Range = largest − smallest
Example
Numbers: 12, 15, 18, 20, 20, 25
- Sum: 110, count: 6
- Mean: 110 ÷ 6 = 18.3333
- Median: the middle two are 18 and 20, so (18 + 20) ÷ 2 = 19
- Mode: 20 (it appears twice)
- Range: 25 − 12 = 13
Mean or median?
The mean uses every value, so one very large number can pull it up. For example, if four friends earn ₹20,000 each and one earns ₹2,00,000, the mean is ₹56,000 but the median is ₹20,000, which describes the group better. Use the median for incomes, prices and anything with extreme values.
FAQ
How do I calculate the average of marks?
Add the marks of all subjects and divide by the number of subjects. For a percentage, use the marks percentage calculator.
Can a set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more numbers appear equally often and more than the rest, all of them are modes. If every number appears once, there is no mode.
What is a weighted average?
An average where some values count more than others, such as credits in a CGPA. Multiply each value by its weight, add them up and divide by the total weight.
