Fuel cost formulas
Fuel needed = Distance ÷ Mileage
Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre
Cost per km = Price per litre ÷ MileageExample
You drive 250 km one way in a car that gives 15 km per litre, and petrol costs ₹105 a litre.
- Fuel needed = 250 ÷ 15 = 16.67 litres
- Fuel cost = ₹1,750
- Cost per km = ₹7
- A return trip costs ₹3,500, or ₹875 each if four friends share it.
Daily commute example
A bike that gives 45 km per litre, used for 40 km a day on 22 working days, uses about 19.6 litres a month. At ₹105 a litre, that is about ₹2,053 a month.
Tips to save fuel
- Keep tyres at the right pressure. Under-inflated tyres cut mileage noticeably.
- Drive at a steady speed and avoid hard braking and fast starts.
- Use the AC sensibly and remove extra weight from the boot.
- Real-world mileage is usually lower than the company's claimed figure, so use your actual mileage for accurate results.

How do I find my vehicle's real mileage?
Fill the tank completely and note the odometer reading. At the next fill-up, fill it fully again and divide the kilometres driven by the litres filled.
Does this work for CNG and diesel?
Yes. Enter the mileage in km per kg for CNG, or km per litre for diesel, and the matching fuel price.
Why is my fuel price different from another city's?
Fuel prices include state VAT, which differs from state to state, so prices vary between cities.
Does it include tolls and parking?
No. It calculates fuel only. Add tolls, parking and food separately.
