Electricity Bill Calculator

Your electricity bill is charged in units. One unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh): a 1,000 watt appliance running for one hour. This calculator shows how many units an appliance uses and what it costs you in a day and a month, so you can see where your bill goes.

How to use the electricity bill calculator

1. Choose the appliance, or pick "Other" and enter its power in watts (printed on the label or in the manual).
2. Enter how many you run, the hours per day and the days in the month.
3. Enter your rate per unit from your electricity bill.

Formula

Units per day   = watts × number of appliances × hours per day ÷ 1,000
Units per month = units per day × days
Monthly cost    = units per month × rate per unit

Example

A 1.5 ton non-inverter AC (about 1,500 W) running 8 hours a day for 30 days, at ₹8 a unit:

• Units per day: 1,500 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 12 units
• Units per month: 12 × 30 = 360 units
• Cost: 360 × 8 = ₹2,880 a month, about ₹96 a day or ₹12 an hour

A ceiling fan (75 W) for 12 hours a day uses only about 27 units a month, or ₹216 at the same rate.

These are typical values. The label on your appliance, or its BEE star label, is more accurate.

Why your bill may be higher

• Slab rates: most states charge more per unit as your monthly use goes up. Use the rate of your highest slab for a rough estimate.
• Fixed charges, electricity duty and taxes are added to the bill.
• AC and fridge don't run at full power all the time; the compressor switches on and off, so real use depends on the weather and settings.
